Employers’ liability insurance covers the legal fees and compensation costs in cases where an employee or volunteer suffers a work-related injury or illness, and then claims damages.

  • Charity and Not for Profit Legal Expenses Cover will account for the funds required to seek legal advice, investigate and defend a court case, along with covering any court fees.

This is invaluable if a claim is made against your charity or not for profit business and you’re required to seek advice and take further legal action. Without this cover, the costs you’re subject to pay can quickly add up.

  • If you or your staff are required to travel overseas to undertake volunteer work or otherwise, you will require insurance to cover you against the associated risks.

We’ll work with your charity to assess the risk of your travel requirements and ensure you have suitable cover in place for what you and your team need.

Instances where clients could claim include breach of professional duty, slander and defamation, breach of confidentiality or loss or damage to documents.  As a professional in the charity sector, your reputation and community standing is everything; Professional Indemnity and Charity Insurance can cover you against the financial repercussions of a claim, including investigation, defence and compensation costs.

  • Charities and not for profit organisations using lifting equipment are required under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) to have such equipment independently inspected.

These items will be subject to set inspections, and in this case, an engineering inspection policy will ensure that inspections are arranged in order that your organisation and machinery is operating safely and compliantly.

  • If money is stolen from your organisation, dependent on the scale of the theft, this could have a huge impact on your operation.

    Typical policy can include;

    • Money in transit

    • Money stored securely on site but not in a safe

Charity Public Liability insurance covers costs incurred for your legal liability should a third party claim for an injury, loss or damage as a direct result of your charity’s negligent activities.

  • The Trustees of your charity are often the decision makers and sometimes, however good the intentions are, if a mistake is made they could be held personally responsible.  That’s where Charity Trustee Liability Insurance comes in.

Charity Insurance FAQs

  • A trustee of a charity has a very important role trying to manage all areas of regulation and law. If a mistake is made due to a  breach of trust, breach of duty or negligence, then a trustee can be held personally liable. Trustees Indemnity Insurance will give you a  degree of reassurance and will protect the individual trustees rather than the charity itself. For that reason, Trustees Indemnity Insurance is regarded as a form of personal benefit to a trustee of a charity. Please note that Trustees Indemnity Insurance is on a claims made basis, meaning that the insurance only responds to claims first made and notified to the insurer during the period of insurance stated on the policy schedule.

  • If your charity employs staff, then by law you are required to have Employers’ Liability Insurance that covers all employees for a minimum of £5 million, for injury or disease contracted while carrying out their duties.  You must display your Employers’ Liability Insurance certificate clearly, to show that your policy is valid.

If you own or use motor vehicles then these must be insured to include cover against third party injury and property damage, in compliance with the Road Traffic Acts.  You must make sure that if employees, trustees or volunteers are using their own vehicles, that they hold sufficient insurance policies.  If you own or use a minibus and it is used on a hire or reward basis, there are some special insurance requirements.

  • It’s always best for charities to treat any volunteers exactly the same as employees when it comes to insurance and make sure that they are covered by your Employers’ Liability or Public Liability insurance.

  • For events such as fetes, shows and galas, we highly recommend that you have Public Liability Insurance – this may be mandatory for certain venues and they may require you to have a specific minimum level of cover.

  • To protect your charity against any losses through fraud or dishonesty from employees, you can take out Fidelity Insurance.  This cover helps to rectify losses to the charity’s funds or valuables.  This cover can also be made to include fraud or dishonesty from any trustees/volunteers.  You should always practice good financial and personnel risk management.
