If you hire staff, even if they’re just volunteers, your business will be legally required to have sufficient Employers’ Liability Cover.
To go without could result in your business being fined up to £2,500 for each day it operates without this cover in place.
Employers’ liability insurance covers the legal fees and compensation costs in cases where an employee suffers a work-related injury or illness, and then claims damages.
-
If your business provides professional advice or services and one of your customers/clients suffers loss as a result of this, you may be held liable for professional negligence.
This covers against the financial repercussions of such a claim, including investigation, defence and compensations costs.
-
If a member of the public is injured or their property damaged as a result of your business, you could be held liable and be required to pay associated fees and potentially compensation costs.
If you sell a product which you make, or sell products produced by a third-party company and they are the cause of injury or damage, again you may be held liable, even if you didn’t manufacture the product.
This cover will protect you against the defence, investigation, court fees and any compensation associated with such a claim, giving you the reassurance that should something go wrong, you’re covered.
-
Business Buildings and Contents insurance serves to protect the structure of your commercial property, including the fixtures and fittings and any outbuildings, along with the contents it holds.
This will protect you in the event of natural risks such as weather, storm and flood damage, along with those such as loss, accidental damage, theft and vandalism. If you have contents of a particularly high value, these can be protected with specialist cover.
Typical cover can include;
Building, outbuildings & fixtures/fittings
Assets held inside your property

Commercial legal expenses cover will account for the funds required to seek legal advice, investigate and defend cases made against your business, along with covering any court fees.
This is invaluable if a claim is made against your business and you’re required to seek advice and take further legal action. Without this cover, the costs you’re subject to pay can quickly add up.
-
If you use your vehicle for work, for anything other than a commute, you will require commercial vehicle cover to make sure you are correctly protected.
Whether you’re driving tools to a site or visiting a client, this cover is essential. We can cover a wide range of vehicles, from cars and vans to other special types. As with standard motor cover, you have the option to choose from three levels of cover; comprehensive, third-party and third-party, fire and theft.

Businesses using lifting equipment are required under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) to have such equipment independently inspected.
These items will be subject to set inspections, and in this case, an engineering inspection policy will ensure that inspections are arranged in order that your organisation and machinery is operating safely and compliantly.
-
Business material damage provides cover for the reinstatement and repair of your building, fixtures/fittings, contents and stock which have been damaged following a destructive event such as fire or flooding.
It’s important to get the right level of cover for this, as, without a correct rebuild estimate, your commercial building could be left vastly underinsured. We can help ensure this figure is correct.

This means that along with being covered for buildings and contents, you will also have further coverage allowing for risks such as loss of rent and unoccupied property protection.

Your directors and senior management have to make tough decisions on a regular basis, and if they make the wrong call they could be held personally responsible.
If a claim is made against the senior management of your business, they could face hefty investigation and defence charges, along with compensation costs. The purpose of Directors and Officers’ Liability insurance is to protect your management financially in the event of claim, so they can continue to make those tough decisions with the peace of mind that they’re covered.

Business Insurance FAQs
-
This cover is purchased to fund the costs of legal advice and/or the costs of bringing or defending a court case. Generally, most Legal Expenses policies contain a clause which specifies that the case must have a reasonable prospect of success in order to pursue or defend, however, each situation is judged on its own merits. The reasoning behind this is quite simple, in that it is not in anyone’s interests to pursue or defend a case they are unlikely to win.
Each policy contains different sections of cover so it is important that you familiarise yourself with the coverage before taking out the policy. These policies are ideal for companies without their own in-house legal team as the costs involved in defending your company’s legal rights will certainly stretch the resources of any business and have a negative effect on their finances. Taking out a policy is a sensible way of protecting yourself in the event of a dispute. Please note that Legal Expenses Insurance is not concerned with the payment of damages.
-
Dependent on the insurer and policy, the onus may be on yourself to keep the MID updated (if so you will be issued with an online login which will enable you to do this). Alternatively if we or your insurers update the MID, if out of office hours, you may send an email to us which should detail the date/time cover is required (please note cover cannot be backdated) and we/insurers will update the MID accordingly.
-
This covers the cost of compensation claims made against your business directors and key managers for alleged wrongful acts. A wrongful act can include breach of trust, breach of duty, neglect, error, misleading statements, wrongful trading. This cover is also known as D&O Insurance.

Employers Liability cover is mandatory so you will be issued with a certificate for this insurance and you must display a copy of the certificate where your employees can easily read it. From the 1st October 2008 you are allowed to display this document electronically provided your employees are made aware of where they can find a copy and it is reasonably accessible. Insurers do not issue a certificate for Public Liability Insurance as this cover is not mandatory. If someone asks to see evidence of your Public Liability Insurance we can produce a To Whom, It May Concern Letter for you.
-
This information is provided to insurers so they can load the information to the Employers Liability Database which was set up by the Employers Liability Tracing Office to help those who have suffered injury or disease in the workplace identify the relevant insurer quickly and efficiently. This database became mandatory with effect from the 1 April 2012. Your ERN number can be found on many documents including, P45, P60, P11/D, Payslips.

This will protect you against the costs of compensating employees who are injured at work or become ill through work. If your business has employees then you are legally obligated to have this insurance and you can incur a fine if you do not have the appropriate cover in place. The definition of ‘employee’ will cover all permanent employees, contract, casual and seasonal employees, labour-only subcontractors , temporary staff including students and people on work placements, volunteers, advisors etc. Companies without any employees are exempt, as well as family businesses that employ their own family members.
-
You need to consider this cover if you own your own business premises which are visited by members of the public, your business organises off-site events or activities that are attended by members of the public, you run a business from your home for professional purposes where members of the public visit.
-
This covers the cost of claims made by members of the Public for incidents that occur in connection with your business activities. Public Liability Insurance covers the cost of compensation for death or bodily injury and / or loss or damage to third party property arising out of the operation of your business. This cover does not protect your employees, temporary staff, volunteers, work placement students etc. – for this you need Employers Liability which is a compulsory cover.
